Synopsis:
After I Conquered, Tony reluctantly returned to earth to take up his old life. He missed his life as the warrior-mage Gilraën. So, when the Seeress finds a way to return Tony to Jaralii, he jumps at the chance. Once again, the elf-woman Gilraën, she takes up the cause of defeating the remaining Adjudicars, uniting humans, elves, dwarves, and orcs under King William’s banner. Meanwhile her tribe of elves in Jaralii Wood begin advancing the technology of the world.
Review:
Gilraën Returns begins the second part of the Jaralii Chronicles: Gilraën and the Doom of the Adjudicars. At the end of I Conquered, Gilraën has fulfilled the Prophecy of Camazhule and satisfied her magical contract, forcing her to return home and take up the life of Tony Richardson (a human male, btw). The Seeress who had guided her in the first trilogy, has need of Gilraën again to defeat the Adjudicars once and for all.
The story is mostly reestablishing Gilraën’s old alliances, working to establish the Elves of Jaralii Wood, and prepare her side for a war that is coming. Very little else happens in the story. There are no antagonists to be seen. However, the interpersonal relationships and technical challenges are quite interesting. I’m wondering how well King William will do with a bicycle battalion. So, in spite of Joanne Reid breaking the rules about the action starting within the first third of the book, I find myself rather captivated by the story.
