Synopsis:

For the human David and the mermaid Faryn, life seems to be getting better. The sea demons are no longer a threat. Humans and merfolk (known as Mers) have reinstated a long-abandoned alliance. David and Faryn are now husband and wife, and both cultures accepted them as such. Best of all, they are expecting their first child.

Now a devastating plague is ravaging the undersea world. Mers who succumb to the disease known as Rage become insane, bloodthirsty monsters. The plague ends in death. Somewhere in a secret cave lies a tablet that may hold the key to a cure. Legend has it that it was stolen by an ancient evil who will only be satisfied by the death of every mer. With the help of human allies, David, Faryn, and their friends seek to find the ancient tablet in a cave that will become a death trap.

Review:

This is the second book of Heather McLaren’s Mer Chronicles. The story picks up some time after the events of Mythos (Mer Chronicles #1). David and Faryn and married and expecting. But, the sudden appearance of an ancient and devastating plague put everything in jeopardy. They must face down two ancient beings who unleashed the plague and hold the key to its cure. Heather McLaren’s writing skills have improved since the first book. The deus ex machina is not as much in evidence. While not slow, the story was hard to get into at first but became more engrossing as I got into it. It still has mermaids, myths, and romance and is a fun read.
