Tanith Aesir has been trained as a Janissary who serves the Council of Nine on Antaris. However, she was born of the world Nashira, before she was taken as a slave, won her freedom, and became a Janissary. She is now back on her home world looking for an amulet that can choose the leader of the empire. However, Nashira does not surrender its own willingly. She is now bonded with a trio of wolves in a telepathic partnership. The time is soon coming when she must fulfill her promise.

On her quest, she must facedown evil slave traders and a traitor who wants the amulet for himself. She must also come to terms with a bounty hunter, an ancient race, and an amulet that has a will of its own.

Peggy Bechko has written a science fiction novel that harkens back to the Forerunner series by the late Andre Norton. Besides ships and lasers, there are telepathic bonds, an ancient race, and a powerful artifact. It is the story of a young woman who was taken by slave traders, and had freed herself. She won a place among the Jainssary of Antaris. The is sent to find a stolen amulet that Antaris needs for to pick its new ruler. However the amulet is not all that it seems. The story was a little hard to get into, but sped up quickly until it became hard to put down.
