It is difficult growing up different. While Kysha Stevens knew she was different, she never realized how different. Her mother has been taking care of Kysha’s sick grandmother for many years. She knows she has a father she can’t remember. After her grandmother dies, Kysha’s mother finally takes her home. At last, she finds out just how different she really is. Her father is an elf, and her mother is a sorceress. She has a friend who is dealing with a mother who is dying in inches. She will be going to a magical school with elves, sorcerers, fairies, gnomes, werewolves, and vampires. Throw in some dragons, and she doesn’t think her new life can get more interesting. But, dark forces are in the shadows and treachery is moving in the school.
J. L. Killabrew’s novella falls into the realm of urban fantasy as well as young adult. It covers intriguing concepts of dragons and cell phones, going to school with werewolves and vampires, teenage romance, and magic powers. The characters are likable, and the dialogue is reasonably smooth. The crisis points in the book come late, so the writing isn’t as tight as it could be. It is still an enjoyable story for readers of urban fantasy.
